A Different Kind of Santa Experience at ArtCafe Studios
Every year around the holidays, parents start searching for Santa. Not the mall version with the long line and the quick photo before the next child is ushered forward. What many parents are really hoping for is something a little slower, a little more magical, and something their children will remember long after the decorations are packed away.
That wish is exactly how the Santa sessions at ArtCafe Studios began.
Over the years, I have created many different storytelling portrait experiences, but the time children spend with our Magical Santa has become one of the most beloved traditions in the studio. It truly is an experience for the whole family. It unfolds more like a story than a photoshoot.

A Visit With Santa – Not a Quick Photo
When children arrive at the studio, they step into a small world that feels a little bit like the North Pole.
Santa greets them personally and spends time talking with them, asking questions, and inviting them into the story of his workshop. Some children help him check the list, others peek into his toy bag, and many simply sit beside him and talk.
The session moves at the child’s pace.
Sometimes children arrive shy and unsure, and within minutes, they are chatting away like old friends. Other times, they arrive bursting with questions they have clearly been saving all year.
Those are my favorite moments to watch.

Where the Real Magic Happens
The photographs are important, of course. Families love having beautiful portraits from the experience.
But the magic doesn’t come from the camera.
It comes from the way children lean in to listen when Santa tells them something special. It comes from the sparkle in their eyes when they realize they have his full attention. And it often comes from the quiet smiles on the parents’ faces as they watch the moment unfold.
Many parents tell me afterward that they felt as if they were watching a small piece of childhood unfold right in front of them.
And that’s exactly why I love these sessions so much.

An Experience Designed to Slow Down
Most Santa photo experiences are designed to move quickly. The line needs to keep moving, and each family only has a moment.
At ArtCafe Studios, we do the opposite.
Children have time to talk, to explore, to ask questions, and to simply enjoy the moment. Some sessions are filled with laughter, others are quiet and thoughtful, but every one of them feels a little different because every child brings their own imagination into the room.
That slower pace allows the story to unfold naturally.
And when that happens, the photographs become something much more meaningful than a quick snapshot.

A Tradition Many Families Return to Each Year
One of the most special parts of these sessions for me is seeing families come back year after year.
The tiny toddlers who once peeked shyly from behind their parents slowly grow into confident children who run straight to Santa with stories to share. Watching that progression over the years is a reminder of how quickly childhood moves.
These sessions capture a moment in time that families hold onto. Not just the portraits, but the memory behind them.
Many families choose to turn their Santa experience into one of our personalized storybooks, which have become incredibly popular over the years. The photographs from the session are combined into a beautifully designed book that tells the story of their visit to Santa’s workshop. Parents often read it to their children at bedtime during the holidays, and as the years go by, the children love pulling it off the shelf and reading about their own Santa adventure again.

The Storytelling Side of Portrait Photography
Long before ArtCafe Studios evolved into the creative space it is today, storytelling photography was already at the heart of what I loved most about my work.
Whether it’s a fairytale portrait, a fantasy adventure, or a quiet moment with Santa, the goal has always been the same: to create experiences that feel meaningful and memorable.
The Santa sessions are simply among the most magical ways storytelling comes to life.

When the Children Leave, the Magic Lingers
After each session, the kids head back out into the world, still talking about what Santa told them or what they discovered in his workshop.
And more often than not, the parents linger for a moment too, smiling and shaking their heads a little as if they just stepped back into childhood themselves.
Those are the moments that remind me why I started doing this in the first place.
Photography can capture an image. But when a story unfolds in front of the camera, it captures something much more lasting.

A Holiday Tradition at ArtCafe Studios
For me, the Magical Santa sessions have always been about more than creating a beautiful photograph. They are about capturing a piece of childhood – the wonder, the imagination, and the quiet magic that lives in those early years.
Years from now, when the kids have grown, those moments remain in the portraits on the wall, the storybooks, the portfolio boxes, and the memories families carry with them, waiting to be revisited.
Being trusted with moments like these is something I never take lightly, and it is one of the greatest joys of the work I do.
